Personal Statement

My name is Millie, and I began my journey in golf aged 9 at Celtic Manor in South Wales. My coach was Head Professional John McDonald, and having been awarded a handicap of 32 I quickly progressed by winning a number of junior stableford competitions within the club. In June 2015 my coach suggested I was ready to enter a national competition sponsored by Ping called The Wales Mini Masters. I entered the age 10-11 girls category, with the local qualifying round played at Cardiff Golf Club which I was very pleased to win. The South Wales regional final was played at Glyn Abbey Golf Club near Llanelli which I also won, qualifying me to play in the National Final on the Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor. In October 2015 I played in the National Final, winning my category by 8 strokes and earning the title Wales Mini Masters Girls National Champion aged 10-11. At this time I was also pursuing gymnastics and trampolining to a very high level, representing both the Forest of Dean Club and the County of Gloucestershire. In early 2016 and with the increasing physical demands of gymnastics I found I had far less time to play golf, so decided to take a break. In late 2016 I moved to Ascot with my mum, and quickly established friends in the area who played golf regularly. I joined Windlesham Golf Club in June 2017 under coach Ben Ross, and quickly realised that I wanted to focus all my sporting aspirations on golf. Early in the following year I trialled for a golf scholarship at Wentworth Club and in April 2018 I was delighted to receive one of only three scholarships awarded that year, the only girl to be made an award. I quickly established a strong working relationship with my current coach James Sharpe, culminating in winning the prestigious Bernard Gallagher Junior Prize with 43 points (14 handicap). Throughout the year I competed in the wrap around Surrey Girls Rookie Tour competition, qualifying as a finalist and finishing 7th overall. I was also selected to train with the Surrey Girls County Development squad. In early 2019 I won the net competition at the Effingham Junior Open (scoring a Net 69 off 10 handicap, Par 73). I played consistently well throughout the year winning several medal and stableford competitions at my home club, culminating in a selection for the Surrey Girls County Performance squad at the end of the 2019 season. Throughout the winter of 2019/20 I played in adult competition and reached the quarter finals of the Surrey Ladies Rothschild Knockout Trophy. A strong start to the 2020 season culminated in winning the Junior Bernard Trophy at Wentworth Club. I quickly followed up by winning the Wentworth Ladies Aggregate Cup, a prestigious club tournament open to all women and played over 2 courses. In winning I scored 1 under par gross on the East Course and 4 over par gross on the renowned West Course. In October I entered 2 Junior Open competitions, just missing out on countback to come 2nd in the Drift Club Junior Open scratch division (3 over par gross, 75 scored), and joint 3rd (6th on countback) scoring a gross 76 in the Foxhills Junior Open scratch division. I continue to work very hard on and off the course, including strength and conditioning work with my PT instructor at Wentworth Club. I currently have a World Golf handicap of 1, and aspire to play golf professionally on Tour both in Europe and the USA. My short term ambition is to achieve scholarship status at a high ranking Division 1 University in the USA.
